¿Qué es ehCOLAB? (english version below)
El Environmental Humanities Colaboratory (ehCOLAB) es una iniciativa conjunta de la Facultad y del Departamento de Filosofía de la Universidad de Murcia, con la finalidad de poner en relación a académicos, artistas y científicos de diversas disciplinas alrededor de temáticas vinculadas a las humanidades ambientales.
ehCOLAB tiene como objetivo incentivar la colaboración entre Universidad y sociedad alrededor de la actual crisis ecosocial. Nuestras aproximación parte de disciplinas como la filosofía ambiental, la historia ambiental, la ecocrítica, la sociología, la estética ambiental, la antropología cultural, la ecología política, los estudios de comunicación, la bioética, etc. ehCOLAB está abierto a escritores, artistas, fotógrafos y diseñadores, así como también a investigadores de las ciencias naturales de toda la Universidad de Murcia y de su entorno.
ehCOLAB pretende colaborar en la creación de una comunidad de humanistas, científicos y artistas dentro de la Universidad de Murcia, y servir de ágora para una intensa interacción entre investigadores y artistas, tanto de Murcia como de fuera de ella.
Misión y objetivos
ehCOLAB parte de la premisa de que la naturaleza no puede entenderse como algo separado de la cultura. Los seres humanos y la naturaleza están interconectados y nuestro impacto en la naturaleza (creación de zonas de muertas, pérdida de biodiversidad, cambio climático) va acompañado de consecuencias imprevistas en nuestro entorno social (migraciones, enfermedades, cambios en los mercados laborales y en el contexto económico, etc.).
Para hacer frente a estos retos las artes, las humanidades y las ciencias sociales son necesarias. Junto a los conocimientos que ofrecen las ciencias naturales, precisamos una visión más profunda de cómo afectan estas transformaciones a la sociedad, la cultura y la vida cotidiana. Las artes, las humanidades y las ciencias sociales podrían ayudarnos a explorar la experiencia de la degradación medioambiental y el cambio climático como algo de lo que formamos parte y que afecta a nuestra experiencia de ser humanos.
ehCOLAB ofrece un enfoque interdisciplinar de las humanidades, con el objetivo de:
- Analizar la implicación humana en el cambio ecológico.
- Mejorar nuestra comprensión de la experiencia humano / naturaleza.
- Cuestionar las narrativas medioambientales dominantes.
- Examinar la relación entre naturaleza y arte.
- Fomentar la participación ciudadana en la transición ecológica.
- Reflexionar sobre los aspectos sociales, éticos, políticos y económicos de una transición ecológica justa.
- Evaluar el impacto de la crisis ecológica en la salud y el bienestar.
- Desarrollar un enfoque “azul” tanto de la investigación como de nuestro compromiso público, centrado en los espacios “azules” de nuestro mundo (arrecifes, océanos, ríos y masas de agua continentales).

What is ehCOLAB?
The Environmental Humanities Colaboratory (ehCOLAB) is a joint initiative of the Faculty of Philosophy and the Deparment of Philosophy at the University of Murcia, with the aim of bringing together academics, artists and scientists from various disciplines around issues related to the environmental humanities.
ehCOLAB aims to encourage collaboration between University and society around the current ecosocial crisis. Our approach is based on disciplines such as environmental philosophy, environmental history, ecocriticism, sociology, environmental aesthetics, cultural anthropology, political ecology, communication studies, bioethics, etc. ehCOLAB is open to writers, artists, photographers and designers, as well as to researchers in the natural sciences from the University of Murcia and the surrounding area.
ehCOLAB aims to collaborate in the creation of a community of humanists, scientists and artists within the University of Murcia, and to serve as an agora for intense interaction between researchers and artists, both from Murcia and beyond.
Goals and Missions
ehCOLAB is based on the premise that nature cannot be understood as something separate from culture. Humans and nature are interconnected and our impact on nature (creation of dead zones, loss of biodiversity, climate change) is accompanied by unforeseen consequences on our social environment (migration, diseases, changes in labour markets and economic context, etc.).
The arts, humanities and social sciences are needed to meet these challenges. Alongside the knowledge offered by the natural sciences, we need a deeper insight into how these transformations affect society, culture and everyday life. The arts, humanities and social sciences could help us explore the experience of environmental degradation and climate change as something that we are part of and that affects our experience of being human.
ehCOLAB offers an interdisciplinary approach to the humanities, aiming to:
- Analyse human involvement in ecological change.
- Improve our understanding of the human-nature experience.
- Challenge dominant environmental narratives.
- Examine the relationship between nature and art.
- Encourage citizen participation in ecological transition.
- Reflect on the social, ethical, political and economic aspects of a just ecological transition.
- To assess the impact of the ecological crisis on health and well-being.
- To develop a ‘blue’ approach to research and engagement, focusing on the ‘blue’ spaces of our world (reefs, oceans, rivers and inland water bodies).
