What are the Charter and Code for Researchers?

The European Charter for Researchers, signed by the University of Murcia in 2013, together with the Code of Conduct for hiring Researchers, are documents from the European Union establishing the guidelines so that European Universities and Research Institutions improve working conditions for researchers and make the researching career in Europe more attractive.

The Charter contains 40 principles defining the responsibilities and rights of researchers and of the entities hiring and/or funding them.

They are grouped in four main areas:

  • Ethical and professional aspects.
  • Open, transparent, merit-based recruitment.
  • Working conditions and social security.
  • Training and career development.

The Code of Conduct for hiring researchers includes a series of principles that must be fulfilled by employers and/or funders when hiring researchers.

These documents are addressed to researchers and employers and/or funding organisations both in the public and private sectors.

The implementation of the principles of the Charter and the Code contribute to the European Space of Research and develop an attractive European labour market for researchers.
