Admission criteria (PhD in Society, Development, and Labour Relations)

Access requirements

Article 7 of Rector's Resolution 42/2012 of February 6, ordering the publication of the Doctorate Regulations of the University of Murcia, establishes the requirements to access a doctoral programme:

1. According to the regulations governing access to any official doctorate programme (Royal Decree 99/2011, of 28 January), candidates must be in possession of an official bachelor’s degree or equivalent and a master’s degree.

2. In addition, students who are in any of the following cases may also access:

a. Have an official Spanish university degree, or of another country belonging to the European Higher Education Area, giving access to a master’s degree programme as per the provisions of Article 16 of Royal Decree 1393/2007, of 29 October, and have passed a minimum of 300 ECTS of official university studies, of which, at least 60 must be at master's degree level.

b. Have an official Spanish Graduate Diploma containing, according to EU law, at least 300 ECTS. These graduates must compulsorily complete the training supplements referred to in article 7.2 of Royal Decree 99/2011, of January 28, unless the syllabus of the corresponding degree includes credits in research training that are equivalent in training value to research credits in master's degree programmes.

c. University graduates who, after obtaining a training place in the corresponding test to access specialised health training, have successfully passed at least two years training in a programme to obtain the official title of one of the specialities in Health Sciences.

d. Have a qualification obtained in accordance with foreign education systems, it need not be officially recognised, the General Doctorate Committee will verify that this qualification accredits a training level equivalent to that of the official Spanish Master's degree and gives access to doctoral studies in the country where it was issued. This admission does not imply, in any case, the official recognition of a student’s previous degrees nor its recognition for purposes others than accessing doctoral education.

e. To be in possession of another Spanish title of doctor obtained according to previous university regulations.

Admission criteria

Notwithstanding the provisions of Article 7 of Royal Decree 99/2011, of 28 January, the selection and admission onto the doctoral programme in Society, Development, and Labour Relations will be carried out by the Academic Committee of the programme.

In assessing the admission criteria, the Committee will apply the following scale (each item valued from 0 to 10 points). The final weighting of each section will be as follows:

  • Academic record obtained in the bachelor’s degree (50%).
  • Academic record obtained in the master’s degree (20%).
  • Accredited knowledge of English and/or French (spoken and written) (10%).
  • Endorsement letter signed by teachers of the candidate’s previous studies and by coordinators of the master’s degree giving access to the programme (10%).
  • Interest in completing the doctoral programme. All registered applications must include a brief written report (800 words at most) or audiovisual supported setting forth the candidate’s reasons and interest in joining the programme, and giving proof of knowledge on the subject matter (10%). The criteria for evaluating this interest will be: consistency of written report, knowledge of the field of studies and interest and affinity in relation to the programme lines of work.

On the point of "Academic record obtained in the master’s degree", the student must reach at least 8 points. In any case, the weighted final score must be higher than 5 out of 10.

In the event of a tie, and in order to guarantee the maximum benefit of the programme, the Academic Committee will finally solve the selection process taking into account the following merits of special relevance in relation to the doctoral programme:

  • Training and experience in research methodology and data analysis.
  • Participation in conferences and research activities in areas related to the programme.

Applicants may be called for a personal interview before the final resolution is issued, in the event of a tie and/or when further clarification is needed on claimed merits, and if deemed adequate by the Academic Committee.

Students can apply to be part-time students, as well as full time students.

In the event of students with special educational needs derived from a physical, sensory or intellectual disability, equality will be ensured in the access conditions and integration in all aspects. Through the Support Unit for Students with Disabilities and/or Special Needs, and in the corresponding cases, with the accreditation of the need, the University of Murcia will promote the provision of adaptations and will specify the appropriate resources in each situation.

Applicant profile

Students applying for the doctoral programme in Society, Development, and Labour Relations, must have one of the following bachelor’s degrees or equivalent: Labour Relations and Human Resources, Sociology and Political Sciences, Law, Political Sciences and Public Management, Business Administration and Management, Economics, Social Work or any other similar degree in terms of training.

Depending on the candidate’s postgraduate studies, there are two applicant profiles:

Profile number 1:

Students who have completed one of the following master's degrees or their equivalents in other universities: Economic Development and International Cooperation; Local Development and Employment; Gender and Equality; Government, Administration, and Public Policies; Orientation and Labour Intermediation; Prevention of Occupational Hazards; Human Resources; Applied Sociology: Social dynamic realities.

Profile number 2:

Students with other professional master’s degrees that include the acquisition of specific competences related to the objectives of this doctoral programme. For students who request admission with this profile, academic complements will be considered on an individual basis.

In both cases, the competences to be acquired will be considered in view of the student’s previous qualifications for admission. Tuition will be in Spanish.

Students with special educational needs

Article 8 of the Doctorate Regulations of the University of Murcia states that in the event of students with special educational needs derived from a disability, the selection and admissions systems and procedures will include the relevant action to favour, as far as possible, equality in the access conditions and integration in all aspects. To do so, the Service of Attention to Diversity and Volunteers (ADV) will evaluate the need for possible syllabus adaptations.
