PhD in Society, Development, and Labour Relations

Doctorado en Sociedad, Desarrollo y Relaciones Laborales

This programme, which has a research/academic profile, aims to provide new doctors with the technical-scientific and critical skills that enable them to develop their subsequent academic and/or professional career. The programme seeks to prepare them so that they can formulate and conduct quality research proposals with international impact. To this end, the programme has teaching and research staff from different research areas in different social and legal sciences (Sociology, Law, Economics, Labour Sciences, etc.) participating on the programme.  In addition, it offers a selection of valuable research lines to train researchers well.

The interest of this programme is threefold: socioeconomic, academic-scientific, and professional. On the one hand, science and technology parks in the Region of Murcia present a high demand for researchers interested in the analysis and solution of problems from a socioeconomic and legal perspective applied to the labour market and to socioeconomic development and well-being. In addition, the programme is a third cycle study programme that offers research and scientific training to graduates in a large number of qualifications (Sociology, Labour Relations, Law, Economics, Social Work, qualifications in the field of Education, Administration and Business Management, Psychology, Medicine and Engineering, among others). From a scientific approach, the programme brings together different disciplines that address social processes, socio-economic development and the worlds of work and cooperation; it aims at contributing to the theoretical and empirical knowledge of our complex social reality. In addition, this doctorate programme opens a relevant door that is increasingly demanded by professionals in sectors related to Sociology, Labour Law, Labour Relations and Occupational Hazards Prevention (technicians in prevention), Socioeconomic Development and Cooperation (labour counsellors, equality and local development agents, experts in international cooperation).

Given the origins of the programme (built upon the doctorate programme in Development and International Cooperation and the PhD programme in Labour Sciences, of the Faculties of Economics and Labour Science, respectively), it has a wide range of potential students, attracting students from different master's degrees in Social and Legal Sciences. However, the most related programmes are, on the one hand, those taught at the Faculty of Economics and Business, including the Master’s Degree in Applied Sociology and the Master’s Degree in Economic Development and Cooperation and, on the other hand, those taught at the Faculty of Labour Sciences, including the Master’s Degree in Local Development and Employment, the Master’s Degree in Occupational Hazards Prevention, the Master’s Degree in Guidance and Labour Intermediation and the Master’s Degree in Management and Human Resources Management.
