Access requirements

Article 7 of Rector's Resolution 42/2012 of February 6, ordering the publication of the Doctorate Regulations of the University of Murcia, establishes the requirements to access a doctoral programme:

  1. According to that established in Article 6 of the Decree 99/2011, of 28 January, in general, for a candidate to access any doctoral programme, they must be in possession of an official Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent, and a Master’s degree.
  2. In addition, students who are in any of the following cases may also access:
    1. Have an official Spanish university degree, or that of another country belonging to the European Higher Education Area, giving access to a Master’s degree programme according to that stipulated in Article 16 of Royal Decree 1393/2007, of 29 October, and have passed a minimum of 300 ECTS of official university studies, of which, at least 60, must be at Master's degree level.
    2. Have an official Spanish Graduate Diploma containing, according to EU law, at least 300 ECTS. These graduates must compulsorily complete the training supplements referred to in article 7.2 of Royal Decree 99/2011, of January 28, unless the syllabus of the corresponding degree includes credits in research training that are equivalent in training value to research credits in master's programmes.
    3. University graduates who, after obtaining a training place in the corresponding test to access specialised health training, have successfully passed at least two years training in a programme to obtain the official title of one of the specialities in Health Sciences.
    4. Have a qualification obtained in accordance with foreign education systems, it need not be officially recognised, the General Doctorate Committee will verify that this qualification accredits a training level equivalent to that of the official Spanish Master's degree and gives access to doctoral studies in the country where it was issued. This admission does not imply, in any case, the official recognition of a student’s previous degrees nor its recognition for purposes others than accessing doctoral education.
    5. To be in possession of another Spanish title of doctor obtained according to previous university regulations.

Admission profile

Students will be able to access the Doctoral Programme in History Geography and History of Art, whenever they have an official qualification scientifically related to the Programme. Thus, it is required to have obtained an official Master's Degree in History of Art, Geography, History, Cultural Heritage, Humanities or any foreign equivalent, once the training level required for access is duly verified. Occasionally, the admission of graduates from other branches will be considered, in the light of their scientific relationship with the programme. However, students with master's degrees, current or new, in the areas and departments of the University of Murcia involved in this PhD will be given particular priority.

The official language of the qualification is Spanish and therefore perfect mastery will be required, as well as B2 level of English. Likewise, the knowledge of any other language will be highly valued, provided that it can be officially accredited.

Admission Criteria

1. Notwithstanding the provisions in article 7 of Royal Decree 99/2011, January 28, the selection and admission to the doctoral programme is subject to the following rules:

a. The selection will be made by the Academic Commission of the PhD programme. The selection by the Academic Committee will be based on that detailed below.

To make the selection the academic commission will use the criteria established in the verification report, which must be taken into account:

  1. An assessment of the academic curriculum.
  2. An assessment of particularly relevant or significant merits related to the doctoral programme.
  3. Any other criterion or procedure previously stated and argued that, in the opinion of the academic committee, allows to verify the suitability of the applicant to enrol in the programme. Of these, the following are mandatory:
    • To have one of the official master’s degrees recognised by the Academic Commission.
    • Coherence of the research topic and methodology proposed by the student and the supervisor with the research lines of this PhD programme.
    • Explicit commitment of the student to carry out the courses and activities or training proposals that are indicated by the commission and that will appear individually specified in the provisional list of candidates admitted.
  4. Resolutions on admission to a doctoral programme will be issued by the rector at the proposal of the programme academic committee, notwithstanding the competence or signature delegations to the deans or directors of centres and doctoral schools.
  5. Admission to a doctoral programme may require the student to attend specific training supplements, as described in the section of training complements; these will not count towards the limit established for the duration in Article 3.2 of Decree 99/2011, of 28 January For the purposes of public prices and the granting of scholarships and study grants, these training supplements will be considered doctoral level training.
  6. The lists of admitted candidates to the doctoral programme will be published in the TOUM (official notice board of the University of Murcia). Other means of publishing might also be established by resolution of the rector.
  7. All provisions held in the regulations and instructions of admission and registration approved by the University of Murcia each academic year will apply to the admission procedure.
  8. In the case of students with special educational needs deriving from disability, the selection and admission systems and procedures must include appropriate support and counselling services in order to assess the need for possible curricular adaptations, itineraries or alternative studies.

For admission, the following scale will be taken into account:

  • Average academic record: up to 50%. It will be applied proportionally to the average.
  • Coming from official master’s degrees in the areas of History, Geography and/or Art History: 20%.
  • Other studies related to the doctoral programme: up to 10% applied proportionally if they are bachelor’s degree or master's degree studies.
  • Other merits: Up to 20%. Among them:
  • Publications (journals: 0.25, books: 0.50). Maximum: 5 points.
  • Courses of over 30 hours (0.1 point). Maximum: 2 points.
  • Presentations in conferences (0.1 point). Maximum: 1 point.
  • Be a Research Fellow in any official call: 5 points.
  • Collaboration scholarship in the last year of the course: 0.50 points.
  • Officially accredited language proficiency (in addition to English). Up to 1 point per level.
  • Computer skills. Up to 0.50

If necessary and so considered appropriate by the committee, interviews with the applicants may be carried out with the objective of assessing the interest, training and / or professional expectations, as well as other skills (up to 1 point)

Students with Special Educational Needs

Article 8 of the Doctorate Regulations of the University of Murcia states that in the event of students with special educational needs derived from a disability, the selection and admissions systems and procedures will include the relevant action to favour, as far as possible, equality in the access conditions and integration in all aspects. To do so, the Service of Attention to Diversity and Volunteers (ADV) will evaluate the need for possible syllabus adaptations.

Number of places offered: 25
