Access Requirements

Article 7 of Rector's Resolution 42/2012 of February 6, ordering the publication of the Doctorate Regulations of the University of Murcia, establishes the requirements to access a doctoral programme:

  1. According to the national regulations and to the internal rules at the University of Murcia (Rector Resolution 42/2012 of 6 February and Decree 99/2011), for a candidate to access any doctoral programme at the University of Murcia, they must be in the possession of an official bachelor’s degree or equivalent and a master’s degree.
  2. In addition, students who are in any of the following cases may also access:
    1. Have an official Spanish university degree, or of another country belonging to the European Higher Education Area, giving access to a master’s degree programme and have passed a minimum of 300 ECTS of official university studies, of which, at least 60, must be at master's degree level.
    2. Have an official Spanish Graduate Diploma containing, according to EU law, at least 300 ECTS. These graduates must compulsorily complete the training supplements referred to in article 7.2 of Royal Decree 99/2011, of January 28, unless the syllabus of the corresponding degree includes credits in research training that are equivalent in training value to research credits in master's programmes.
    3. University graduates who, after obtaining a training place in the corresponding test to access specialised health training, have successfully passed at least two years training in a programme to obtain the official title of one of the specialities in Health Sciences.
    4. Have a qualification obtained in accordance with foreign education systems, it need not be officially recognised, the General Doctorate Committee will verify that this qualification accredits a training level equivalent to that of the official Spanish Master's degree and gives access to doctoral studies in the country where it was issued. This admission does not imply, in any case, the official recognition of a student’s previous degrees nor its recognition for purposes others than accessing doctoral education.
    5. To be in the possession of another Spanish title of doctor obtained according to previous university regulations.

Admission profile

REPROBIOL is a programme of doctoral studies specially addressed to students with qualifications in biomedical and/or experimental sciences, amongst which we can include graduates in Medicine, Veterinary studies, Biology, Pharmacy, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Animal Production and other related areas.

From our previous experience in doctoral programmes, we have been able to verify the advantages of the joint work of students from different training profiles in a common specialised programme centred on reproduction and which combines basic research with the application of epidemiological and clinical technologies and studies.

Students who access the REPROBIOL Programme must be able to express themselves properly in Spanish and understand and speak a foreign language, particularly English. Students must have an integrated and updated knowledge of the embryological, anatomical, histological, molecular and physiological basis of reproduction in domestic mammals, and in humans. In addition, students must be able to perform efficiently in a reproduction laboratory (animal or human), and perform basic techniques of biology and technology reproduction, such as gamete manipulation, culture media preparation, in vitro fertilisation, artificial insemination, cell culture, etc.

Likewise, students should be able to process biological samples obtained from the male or female reproductive system through specialised laboratory techniques for research purposes and to design simple experimental models capable of evaluating objectives or hypotheses.

In addition, they must efficiently manage the bibliographic resources necessary for scientific documentation, including the use of basic tools in information and communication technologies (ICT); furthermore, students must be able to write, present and discuss a simple piece of research work rigorously.

Admission Criteria

Notwithstanding the provisions of article 7 of R.D. 99/2011, of January 28, selection and admission to the doctoral programme is subject to the following rules:

  1. The selection process in the doctoral programme REPROBIOL will be carried out by the Doctorate Programme Academic Commission. To do so, the criteria established in the verification memory will be applied, taking into account, among others, the following:
    • Adequacy of the academic curriculum to the access profile. This criterion has a weight of 30% of the total evaluation.
    • Have a master's degree or 60 master's degree level credits related to the field of Animal and/or Human Reproductive Health Biology and Technology issued by a Higher Education institution in the European Higher Education Area or, if applicable, equivalent training verified by agreement of the competent body at the UM. This criterion has a weight of 30% of the total evaluation.
    • Particularly relevant or significant merits in relation to the doctoral programme REPROBIOL. This criterion has a weight of 30% of the total evaluation. In this section, the following relevant merits related to the REPROBIOL Programme profile will be taken into consideration:
      • Other postgraduate courses.
      • Pre-doctoral fellowships (collaborations, introductory activities to research) and other fellowships or similar contracts.
      • Pre-doctoral stays or stays for practices in research centres.
      • Contributions submitted to conferences, seminars and other types of meetings or events.
      • Research articles in journals or reviews.
      • Books and book chapters.
      • Any other criterion or procedure previously explained and grounded which, in the opinion of the Doctorate Programme Academic Commission, enables to verify the applicant’s suitability to join the programme. This criterion has a weight of 10% of the total evaluation.
  2. The resolution on admission to the doctoral programme shall be issued by the rector, at the proposal of the Doctorate Programme Academic Commission and respecting the delegation of powers or signature.

The lists of students admitted onto the doctoral programme will be published on the UMU Official Notice Board (TOUM, https://sede.um.es/sede/tablon/inicio.seam). Other means of publication may be established by a rector resolution.

The admissions procedure established in the regulations and guidelines for admission and enrolment in the UM, as approved for each academic year, will be applied.

In the case of students with special educational needs resulting from disability, the selection and admission systems and procedures must include appropriate support and counselling services, which will evaluate the need for possible curricular adaptations, itineraries or alternative studies.

Students with Special Educational Needs

Article 8 of the Doctorate Regulations of the University of Murcia states that in the event of students with special educational needs derived from a disability, the selection and admissions systems and procedures will include the relevant action to favour, as far as possible, equality in the access conditions and integration in all aspects. To do so, the Service of Attention to Diversity and Volunteers (ADV) will evaluate the need for possible syllabus adaptations.
