Doctorado en Envejecimiento y Fragilidad

The Doctorate Programme in Ageing and Frailty promotes research related to the elderly members of the population, their environment and possible as well as real problems that may arise in adulthood. Through advanced research teams and agreements with leading institutions nationally and worldwide that are part of the programme, the research results obtained can provide strategies and improvements in the quality of life of the elderly. Doctoral students will conduct research on risk factors and the prevention of frailty, the influence of lifestyle habits on healthy ageing, neurodegenerative diseases, social and economic problems of the elderly (and how to deal with them), as well as the importance of new technologies applied both to research as well as to improving the day-to-day life of older people.

Expert research teams and the support of the University of Murcia, as well as regional government bodies and a large part of the region's business fabric make this programme well-suited for those students who, once they have completed their master’s degree, wish to focus their future on research into improving the quality of life of elderly people.

The five research lines of the programme address the study of ageing and its consequences from the perspective of Neurosciences, the chronobiology of ageing and the impact that lifestyles and eating have on healthy ageing. The researchers of the programme also lead research projects associated with human responses at old age in all systems of the organism and the ethical and legal aspects related to people's vulnerability during this stage of life. The socio-economic problems of these life stages (for both individuals and the community) are also covered as well as the desired strategies that should be improved. It is worth highlighting the inclusion of new technologies, engineering and computing (big data and intelligent analysis of data applied to ageing) to determine predisposition, risk factors, and aspects to improve in the lives of elderly people.

National and international publications of the research teams guarantee the research quality of the members of the programme, which is supported by the International School of Doctoral Studies at the University of Murcia, the verification of the National Agency for Quality Assessment (ANECA) and the authorisation of the inter-university council of the Region of Murcia.

The president of the programme invites future researchers interested in topics included in the programme to train and carry out their doctoral theses, and participate in future research within the framework of the doctoral programme in Ageing and Frailty at the University of Murcia.
