Admission criteria (PhD in Oenology, Viticulture, and Sustainability)

Access Requirements

Article 6 and the 2nd additional disposition of Royal Decree 99/2011 of 28 January establish the requirements to access a doctoral programme:

  1. According to the regulations governing access to any official doctorate, candidates must be in possession of an official bachelor’s degree or equivalent and a master’s degree.
  2. In addition, students who are in any of the following cases may also access:
    1. Have an official Spanish university degree, or of another country belonging to the European Higher Education Area, giving access to a master’s degree programme as per the provisions of Article 16 of Royal Decree 1393/2007, of 29 October, and have passed a minimum of 300 ECTS of official university studies, of which, at least 60 must be at master's degree level.
    2. Have an official Spanish Graduate Diploma containing, according to EU law, at least 300 ECTS. These graduates must compulsorily complete the training supplements referred to in article 7.2 of Royal Decree 99/2011, of January 28, unless the syllabus of the corresponding degree includes credits in research training that are equivalent in training value to research credits in master's degree programmes.
    3. University graduates who, after obtaining a training place in the corresponding test to access specialised health training, have successfully passed at least two years training in a programme to obtain the official title of one of the specialities in Health Sciences
    4. Have a qualification obtained in accordance with foreign education systems, it need not be officially recognised, the General Doctorate Committee will verify that this qualification accredits a training level equivalent to that of the official Spanish Master's degree and gives access to doctoral studies in the country where it was issued. This admission does not imply, in any case, the official recognition of a student’s previous degrees nor its recognition for purposes others than accessing doctoral education.
    5. To be in possession of another Spanish title of doctor obtained according to previous university regulations.
  3. Graduates, Architects or Engineers who hold a Diploma of Advanced Studies (DAS) obtained in accordance with the provisions of Royal Decree 778/1998 or have a Spanish certificate of research proficiency regulated in Royal Decree 185/1985.
  4. Doctoral students who started their doctoral programme according to previous university regulations. They will need to meet the general admission criteria


Under no circumstances could students be admitted with degrees or technical engineering (or equivalent) with fewer than 240 ECTS. In such cases, the student will apply for admission and will first need to pass a master’s degree. 

Applicant profile

The student’s admission will comply with principles of respect for fundamental rights and equality between men and women, as well as the principle of universal accessibility.

Applicants must hold an Official Master’s degree related to research to chemical, agri-food or life technologies and sciences, especially those taught in whole or in part by the universities within the programme.

Recommended master’s degrees for the PhD programme:

  • Master’s degrees in Sciences majoring in Oenology, Viticulture, Agri-food, Food Technology and Science, Agronomy, Environmental Sciences, Agronomic Engineering.
  • Master’s degrees in other Experimental Sciences (Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering) of Health Sciences (Pharmacy, Nutrition and Diet).

In addition to the above-mentioned master’s degrees, other advanced level studies (DEA) could include the following fields: Agronomy, Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Food Technology and Science, Environmental Sciences, Pharmacy, and Chemistry

Skills and prior knowledge


Admitted students are required to have skills and prior knowledge related to the areas specified above in Agri-food or Biotechnology, Biology, Chemistry and Technologies. A list of skills for each degree is available for each of the universities involved in the programme and which are appropriate for access to the programme. 

It is advisable that students have knowledge of scientific English (e.g., First Certificate) for the presentation of the bibliography as well as for carrying out of some of the activities. 

Admissions criteria

The admissions procedure established in the regulations and admission and registration instructions at the University of Murcia that is approved for each academic year will be applicable.

Once the student is admitted, he/she will register on the PhD programme within the deadlines established in the academic calendar. A tutor will be appointed, and he/she could be the student’s thesis supervisor, or another tutor related with the thesis research. The tutor/supervisor will inform the students about training activities during the PhD programme. The Interuniversity Academic Committee may delegate these functions to each university in an academic subcommittee of the programme at the university, whenever necessary.

Students who carry out the doctoral thesis in different institutions than those of the programme must have the approval of the institution in which the thesis is to be carried out and that of a professor of the programme who will act as the tutor.

Selection criteria

When the number of applications is higher than the number of available places, the Academic Committee will consider the following in line with the procedure established by the University:

  • Academic criteria: The academic record and curriculum vitae are required. The average marks of the academic record will be considered up to 90%:  up to 55% for the bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) according to the level of affinity to the programme; up to 35% for the master’s degree.
  • Other merits (rest of the marks up to 100%): Recognition of the academic record, a scholarship or activities related to introductory research relevant to the programme and knowledge of languages.

All students will be subject to the same admission criteria.

Students with special educational needs

The universities have a support and counselling system for students with special educational needs derived from a disability, the selection and admissions systems and procedures will include the relevant action to favour, as far as possible, equality in the access conditions and integration in all aspects. To do so, the Service of Attention to Diversity and Volunteers (ADV) will evaluate the need for possible syllabus adaptations.
