RESUMEN: Advances in next generation sequencing have open a new set of opportunities for medical research and clinical practice. Since the completion of the human genome, most of the focus has been put in exploiting human genomics with major advances achieved in the diagnosis of genetic diseases and in guiding cancer therapy. Although less commonly considered, the use of sequencing technologies to infectious or commensal microbes has also brought about many new opportunities in medicine. In my talk I will highlight how sequencing technologies can be used to i) investigate the role of the human microbiota in our health and disease, and ii) understand how human pathogens evolve and adapt. I will illustrate these applications by describing some of the ongoing projects in my lab including the study of the human microbiome, and the emergence of virulence in fungal pathogens.
