Data Science for Everyone?

HORARIO: martes 21 de marzo de 2017, 16:30

LUGAR: Salón de Actos, Facultad de Informática, Campus de Espinardo, Universidad de Murcia

TÍTULO: "Data Science for Everyone?"

RESUMEN: With data being present just about everywhere, so are data scientists. Well, not really. Data science, in fact, has become increasingly complex and to master it, one has to acquire deep understanding of math, statistics and computer science. Their joint complexity could drive away the potential users, leaving the joy of data-based discovery to a few enlightened gurus. In the talk, I will argue that this should not be the case. Data science relies on a set of almost standard techniques that can be assembled together into data mining workflows just like Lego bricks. I will argue that these techniques could be intuitively explained to lay users, and that the main ingredients to foster such explanation are interactive visualization of data and models and easy-to-use tools that support experimentation through visual programming. For the help in convincing the audience that empowering of lay users with data mining skills is possible and can be easily achieved, the talk will be comprised of several practical demonstrations where I will dive into several interesting data sets with Orange data mining suite.

PONENTE: Blaž Zupan is a full professor at the Faculty of Computer and Information Science, University of Ljubljana, head of the Laboratory for Bioinformatics (http://biolab.si) and a visiting professor at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, USA. His main research interests are data mining, machine learning, data fusion, and interactive data visualization. His passion is developing data science tools that anyone could use. His lab develops Orange (http://orange.biolab.si), a popular open source data mining suite. Using visual programming, users of Orange can combine basic analytical components and build powerful workflows for data analytics.
