Plastination lab

The Silicon S-10 plastination technique was set up in our lab in 1992. Very basic equipment was initially located in the dissection room. New more specific items were progressively added and in 2000 a new plastination lab was built up. Then, not only silicone but epoxy and polyester techniques have been set up.

The plastination lab has an almost continuous activity, so as to produce an average of 400 specimens each year. Anatomical plastinations are commonly used for both teaching and research. Nevertheless, the most eye-catching specimens are commonly displayed in the Anatomy Museum or are borrowed for exhibitions. External institution or companies can borrow plastinated specimens according to the terms and conditions included in ad hoc contracts. Work in the plastination lab is particularly intense while the plastination courses (workshops) which currently take place by mid December each year.
