General Information on the Doctoral programme in Philosophy

Presentation

The Interuniversity Doctoral Programme in Philosophy offers an advanced training in philosophical research coming to a head with the defense of a doctoral thesis.

The programme is jointly implemented by 6 Spanish universities: University of Alicante, University of Almería, University of Castilla-La Mancha, University of La Laguna, University of Zaragoza and University of Murcia. These universities signed a strategic alliance aiming at gathering teachers and researchers around teams and projects with higher impact and excellence.

In fact, the programme counts on 48 PhD researchers (12 professors, 31 university lecturers and 5 contracted PhD lecturers) who represent a relevant critical mass within the Spanish field of philosophy.

Organised in four teams, they offer 29 lines of research, supported by active national and international research projects, which allows the doctorate to study in a dynamic and enriching working environment offering frequent seminars, lectures and conferences held by first level national and international guests.

There are, on the other hand, strong links and agreements with European and American institutions (62 foreign researchers collaborate with the programme). This collaboration allows students to take part in complementary training stays in other universities and international research centers.

In short, the Interuniversity Doctoral Programme in Philosophy guarantees excellent conditions to those who pursue the title of Doctor, but also to students from other areas of knowledge who wish to add a philosophical perspective to their training.

Escuela Internacional de Doctorado

Admission Criteria (Doctoral programme in Philosophy)

According to the national regulation and to the internal rules at the University of Murcia (Rector Resolution 42/2012 of 6 February and Decree 99/2011) access to doctoral programmes is subjet to the following requirements:

1. For a candidate to access any doctoral programme at the University of Murcia, it is necessary that he/she is in the possession of an official Bacherlor’s degree or equivalent and a Master’s degree.

2. In addition, students who are in any of the following cases may also access:

a. Have an official Spanish university degree, or of another country belonging to the European Higher Education Area, giving access to a Master’s programme and have passed a minimum of 300 ECTS of official university studies, of which, at least 60, must be at Master's level.

b. Have an official Spanish Graduate Diploma with a content, according to the rules of the EU law, of at least 300 ECTS. These graduates must compulsorily complete the training supplements referred to in article 7.2 of Royal Decree 99/2011, of January 28, unless the syllabus of the corresponding degree includes credits in research training that are equivalent in training value to research credits in master's programmes.

c. University graduates who, after obtaining a training place in the corresponding test to access specialized health training, have successfully passed at least two years of training in a programme to obtain the official title of one of the specialties in Health Sciences.

d. Have a diploma obtained in accordance with foreign educational systems –no need to have it officially recognised, after the General Doctorate Committee has verified that this certificate accredits a training level equivalent to that of the official Spanish Master's degree and giving access to doctoral studies in the country where it was issued. This admission does not imply, in any case, nor the official recognition of student’s previous degrees nor its recognition for purposes others than accessing doctoral education.

C. To be in the possession of another Spanish title of doctor obtained according to previous university regulations.

Admission profiles

Profile 1. The Doctoral Program in Philosophy is especially recommended for graduates in Philosophy or graduates who have completed a master's degree in Philosophy.

However, philosophy, because of its transdisciplinary nature, allows other profiles to access. In fact, this Program is especially recommended for:

Profile 2. Graduates in any branch of knowledge who have completed a master's degree in Philosophy.

Profile 3. Graduates in Philosophy or Humanities who have completed the Master’s programme on Secondary School Teacher Training (specializing in Philosophy). Specific lines of research have been designed for this profile. Students under this profile and specific research lines do not need to attend any supplementary training.

Profile 4. Graduates and masters in the field of Arts and Humanities or any other, provided that the chosen line of research is consistent with the academic and research training received in the degree and/or the master. An appropriate supplementary training is foreseen in these cases.

Moreover, although no accredited knowledge of a second language relevant for research or widely used by the academic community is required, once admitted, the student will be required to acquire -through personalized training plans promoted by the International School of Doctoral Studies or by the Program or by any other means- the capacity of communication in the languages commonly used by the international scientific community.

To acquire competences in a modern language is of particular importance for students who wish to obtain the mention of "international Ph.MR." because it requires a good level of English or a modern language other than Spanish.

Admission Criteria

Because of the trans-disciplinary nature of philosophy, access to the programme can be allowed with bachelor’s and master’s degrees others than those in Philosophy and Humanities whenever the proposed thesis is coherent with the student’s degrees. The Academic Commission of the Program will be in charge of assessing the consistency on the basis of an interview and a report previously delivered by the student. In case the research plan is considered to be inconsistent, the student will be requested a personal commitment to attend an appropriate training complement (in agreement with the director and/or tutor) from the masters’ programmes in Philosophy taught at any of the Programme Universities involved,

Students who access the Program with a Master's Degree in Secondary Education must, in accordance with the recommendations of the Academic Commission, complete the training complements in a university master's degree in Philosophy of any of the programme Universities. However, students who access with the Master's in Secondary School (branch of Philosophy) and wish to research on the lines “Didactics of Philosophy” or “Ethics and Teaching” will be able to access the programme with  no complementary training.

Selection Criteria and Admission to the Program

Notwithstanding the provisions in article 7 of Royal Decree 99/2011, January 28, the selection and admission to the doctoral program is subject to the following rules:

1. The selection will be made by the Academic Commission of the PhD program.

2. The selection by the Academic Committee will be based on the following criteria:

-An assessment of the academic record (75%).

-An evaluation of the merits of particular research or professional relevance (participation in conferences, published papers, teaching experience in philosophical matters in non-university teaching environments, participation in philosophical societies etc..) or in relation to the doctoral program (10%).

-Motivation, interest, etc. valued by the Commission during the interview (15%).

Personal interviews with candidates will be used to assess aspects such as personal maturity, motivation, initiative or individual and team work capacity.

In any case, admission to the doctoral program will include the commitment to attend the training supplements the Academic Committee deems convenient.

In addition, in any case, the final resolution will be dictated by the rector of each of the universities, at the proposal of the academic committee and without prejudice to the delegation of competences or signature that might happen in favor of faculty deans or doctoral schools directors.

The list of admitted students will be published on electronic and faculty bulletin boards, unless other means are established by a rector resolution.

The regulation, admission and registration instructions approved by the different programme universities will also apply to the admission procedure.

In the case of students with special educational needs derived from disability, selection and admission systems and procedures will include adequate support and counseling services.

Number of places available: 48
