Online Course Planta Sapiens: The New Science of Plant Intelligence

June 18, 25, July 2, 5-6pm CEST  2024, online

In this course, hosted by Roundatable, attendees will explore the groundbreaking realm of plant intelligence embarked upon at the Minimal Intelligence Lab. Participants will delve into the marvels of plant behaviors as unearthed through timelapse photography, engage in the empirically-informed debate on plant sentience, and discuss the ethical implications of recognizing plants as intelligent beings. Furthermore, you will discover how plants can inspire innovative robotic designs, moving beyond human-centric views to appreciate the complex world of flora. This course is perfect for the curious learner eager to see the natural world in a new light.

Session 1 (June 18) sets the stage by challenging human-centric views. Participants learn to appreciate the intricate world of plants, understanding their life from a non-human perspective. This session lays the foundational knowledge and curiosity needed to explore deeper concepts of plant intelligence.

In Session 2 (June 25) we delve into the latest research and discoveries that illuminate the complex behaviors and communication methods of plants. To do so, Prof. Calvo shares insights from timelapse photography and empirical studies, revealing how plants interact with their environment and each other in sophisticated ways.

Session 3 (July 2) explores the philosophical and ethical implications of plant sentience. Participants are encouraged to consider the moral considerations of plant intelligence, discussing how this new understanding impacts our ethical obligations to the natural world. Additionally, we explore how plants inspire innovative approaches in technology and robotics, highlighting the potential for a future where human and plant intelligence coalesce.

Join us for a thought-provoking exploration that promises to change how you view the natural world.

This is a live, virtual course. Your purchase of this course includes interactive opportunities and unlimited, permanent access to recordings of each session.
