CALL FOR PAPERS

European Sociological Association Conference, Murcia, Spain Sept 23-26 2003

 ENVIROMENT & SOCIETY

The overall theme of the ESN sessions is "Sustainability and Social Change". This broad theme will be elaborated in a series of more specific sessions, including:

  1. Nature-society relations and new theories of social research
  2. Biotechnology and the social sciences
  3. Environmental attitudes, social movements, and civil society.
  4. Expert knowledge and environmental democracy.
  5. Nature policy between EU regulation and local participation.
  6. Sustainable development after Johannesburg.
  7. Corporate governance: a new road to sustainability?
  8. Environmental justice and environmental policy.

We are open to proposals for additional session themes, as far as they can be accommodated in the conference schedule. Since there is this option for additional sessions, authors who would like to submit papers for other themes than the ones listed here are invited to do so.

The Environment & Society Network is a research network of the European Sociological Association. It aims to bring together social researchers in the field of environmental sociology and policy in Europe, and to stimulate the debate among social scientists in Europe and around the world. Authors from countries within and outside of Europe are welcome to participate.

Authors are invited to submit an abstract of approximately 250 words before February 28, 2003. Abstracts should be submitted by e-mail to the session coordinator (address, see below). If possible, indicate the session(s) or themes you consider appropriate for the paper. A second call for papers with more detailed information will be forthcoming later. If you haven't submitted a paper by then, but are interested in receiving this second call, please send an e-mail to the session coordinator.

We hope Murcia will further strengthen the network and the environmental sociology debate in Europe.

General information

At the 5th ESA Conference in Helsinki, the research network on Environment & Society explored the relationship between 'power and the environment' through a number of sub-themes dealing with markets, civil society, regulation & implementation, and the tensions in present theoretical and methodological literature.
