Job Title: Senior Lecturer/Lecturer in Translation Studies
band: 9 (Senior Lecturer)/8 (Lecturer)
Department/School budget centre: School of Languages, Cultures, Art History and Music (LCAHM), College of Arts and Law, University of Birmingham
HOURS OF WORK: Full Time
CLOSING DATE: 31 Jan 2011

The School of Languages, Cultures, Art History and Music (LCAHM) is one of six schools within the College of Arts and Law. It contains seven departments, including some of highest rated research units in the College. The Languages area, consisting of French Studies, German Studies, Hispanic Studies, Italian Studies and the  Centre for Modern Languages, has wide-ranging research strengths across aspects of European culture, history and society. The language departments collaborate in teaching and research and are particularly successful in delivering joint postgraduate programmes.

Translation Studies at Birmingham is a major growth area, featuring as a very popular final-year module in the European Studies degree and as an increasingly popular MA programme. The latter builds on a well established programme originally run by the Centre for English Language Studies with whom we have collaborated to launch an exciting new MA with dual English and Modern Language pathways. The person appointed would work in close collaboration with the Centre for English Language Studies (http://www.cels.bham.ac.uk/)

We are now looking for an academic to take these developments further, to support Translation Studies at undergraduate level, to expand and strengthen the MA, and to help build doctoral research in this area.

For this post we are seeking to appoint a colleague with:

- the ability to teach Translation Studies at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels
- a track record of ongoing research and, for Senior Lectureship, leadership in research linked to one of the principal modern languages of the School (French, German, Italian or Spanish)
- native or near native competence in one or more of these languages
- a research specialism in an area of Translation Studies which will feed into teaching options at MA level and PhD supervision
-  a track record of generating external grant income

Applications are invited for appointment to Senior Lecturer or Lecturer, depending on the career profile of the successful applicant.
