      Research into fish immune system is relatively new but significant progress has been achieved over the past 20 years, partly because of the phylogenetical position of this vertebrates group. Fish are the first animal group showing both innate (nonspecific) and anticipatory (specific) immune responses. However, fish depend to a much greater extend on the innate defense mechanisms and this is especially true for fish living in cold water since the development of a specific immune response is temperature dependent. On the other hand, the recent expansion of aquaculture has led to a growing interest in understanding fish diseases, so that they can be treated or prevented. Hence, knowledge of the fish immune system of species with economic interest as well as its possible modulation by different substances, have become a relevant research field. Our research group has been working during the last 15 years on the innate immune system of gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata L.) and sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.), two marine fish species of economic interest. We have studied the ontogeny and tissue distribution of the leucocytes from these two species as well as their main functions, including migration, phagocytosis, respiratory burst, nitric oxide production, cytotoxicity and citokines (MAF) production. Our current research involved the study of fish immunostimulation with natural substances (i.e. vitamins and chitin) as well as recombinant molecules (cytokines).
