MEETINGS ABOUT EQA REVIEW OF TEACHING
You may be aware that the Mathematics Department is to be visited by an Educational Quality Assurance review team next week, from 13th-16th March. This letter is to tell you what to expect and how you can help.
Our EQA review is part of a wider government review of teaching in all UK university departments, which has been taking place over the last few years. All mathematics departments are currently in the process of being assessed and it's our turn now.
The seven government appointed reviewers will be in the department from Monday to Thursday. They will be assessing six aspects of our teaching provision:
Curriculum Design, Content and Organisation
Teaching, Learning and Assessment
Student Progression and Achievement
Student Support and Guidance
Learning Resources
Quality Management and Enhancement
We shall be awarded a mark from 1 (worst) to 4 (best) on each of these aspects, giving a maximum possible total of 24. These results will be revealed to us on Thursday March 16th in the late afternoon. So far only one university (Birmingham) has scored 24 for mathematics, but three (Cambridge, Bristol and Sheffield Hallam) have scored 23. This presents us with an interesting challenge! The score that we achieve will be widely reported (including university league tables) and may potentially affect future funding for the department.
If you do any form of teaching/demonstrating you may find that there is an assessor in the room. They will be observing teaching on Tuesday 14th, Wednesday 15th (a.m.) and possibly Thursday a.m. We will know which classes are going to be observed, next Monday and a notice to this effect will go up on level 6. If you are teaching it is essential to look active!
We are holding a series of meetings this week where we shall provide more detailed information about what to expect. You are welcome to attend either of the meetings (although they are primarily for students).
