A brief history
The University of Murcia is an institution committed to public service
in the area of higher education. The first university in Murcia is believed
to have been founded in the year 1272, in the time of Alfonso X El Sabio.
This university, however, disappeared shortly after its creation. The
current University of Murcia was founded in 1915 and installed in the «Colegio
de La Merced», currently the site of the Law Faculty. Due to the
wide range of studies on offer and the steady increase in the number
of students, nine new buildings have been built on various sites. The
main Campus is located in Espinardo and currently accommodates over half
the student population as well as a high proportion of the courses on
offer.
The University of Murcia is a centre of constant growth: its faculties
and schools have multiplied by five in the last fifteen years and the
number of students has increased from 8,000 to more than 30,000. This
tendency is also reflected in the University’s academic and research
capacity.
