MURCIA, CITY OF WELCOME
[City of welcome] [Tourist interest] [Turist Information]

Places of tourist interest

Murcia, city of Arabic origin, was founded by Abderraman II in 825 A.D. in the fertile valley of the Segura river. Since then, it has been a crossroads for differ-ent civilizations, core of the Mediterranean and home of culture and arts, main-taining the strong signs of its history.
The Casino (1847), in Trapería, has a magnificent Arab patio, a rococo ballroom and many other beautiful halls.
Some other architectural works of interest are the Teatro Romea and the City Hall (Ayuntamiento), whose classical facades date from the XIX century.
Murcia offers the possibility of admiring its artistic heritage in many museums, art galleries and exhibition halls that form an important part of the city's lively cultural life: Museum of Fine Arts, Archaeological Museum, Salzillo Museum (with the work of this baroque sculptor of genius), the Cathedral Museum, Palacio Almudí Art Centre, Bullfighting Museum, Ramón Gaya Museum, Hy-draulic Museum, Science Museum.

Post-Conference Tours
Several visits have been organized for after the Conference: to Cartagena and the Mar Menor, to enjoy the beaches; to the medieval town of Caravaca de la Cruz which celebrates its jubilee in 2003; to indulge in the Archena spas; or to experience the spell of the Murcian variety of flamenco, the "Cante de las Minas" in La Unión. There will be also a two/three day optional tour to Granada.

The Mar Menor

The Mar Menor, a large salt-water pool (170 square kilometres), is one of the most important tourist centres, and is considered a unique spot in the Mediterra-nean. It is a small inland sea of calm waters, separated from the Mediterranean by a thin isthmus of land from 200 to 1500 metres wide and 22 kilometres in length, la Manga del Mar Menor, crossed by several natural canals that connect both seas.
